Companion Urns for Two People

Oftentimes when the loved one is a spouse or partner, the other half is unprepared for the sudden loss of their counterpart, so a companion cremation urn is a good choice of putting your loved one to rest.  Everlasting Memories has a wide selection of unique and beautiful companion urns that have been crafted with the express purpose of paying homage to two people.

What Is A Companion Urn?

A companion urn is a cremation urn that holds the cremated ashes of more than one person.  The urns are also called “couples urns” and are designed to hold the cremated remains of spouses, parents, or even a parent and child.  Most companion cremation urns hold approximately 400 cubic inches of cremated ashes  (1 lb. of body weight = 1 cubic inch of ashes).

These exceptional urns are available in several different materials and may or may not include a divider.  The divider keeps the ashes of each individual separate from one another, while other couples cremation urns just have one large space where the ashes of both people are placed together.

Selecting two-person crematory urns is not an everyday occasion and we understand that families will have a lot of questions.  Find out more information on choosing the correct size urn here or let us assist you! What Types Of Companion Urns Are Available?

Companion urns are available in a variety of materials and can oftentimes be customized to reflect the lives of both individuals.  The interior volume of the couples cremation urn for ashes will vary from urn to urn, so it’s important to factor that in when making your choice.

Metal Companion Cremation Urns

Metal companion cremation urns will hold the ashes of two individuals and vary in cubic inches of cremation ashes.  These metal couples urns are crafted from pewter, bronze, and brass and are available in several different styles and themes, each offering a variety of different ways in which families can customize the urn.

Whether you’re looking to keep the ashes separate or have the ashes together, metal companion urns are a great option.  Metal couples urns such as the Classic Pewter Companion Urn has two distinct urns for each individual’s ashes and the urns are jointed atop a heart-shaped base.  Others, like the Best Friends Bronze Urn, have one cavity that will hold up to 400 cubic inches of cremated ashes.

Metal companion urns are ideal for couples that are looking for a simple and understated resting place for the ashes of two.  Additionally, since many metal two-person crematory urns are not highly decorated, such as the Together Forever Companion Urn, the urns are a good choice for families that are displaying the urn privately, such as in the bedroom.

They could also be used to hold the ashes of more than two people.

Due to the natural beauty of hardwoods, wood cremation urns for two people offer great versatility and are an ideal option for every family.  Wood couples urns can be integrated into any decor and make for a beautiful and warm display. Companion Urn FAQ's

Many families have questions when it comes to choosing a couples urn for ashes. We've together our most frequently asked questions from our customers.

Will the ashes be mixed together?

There are companion urns that come with a divider and companion urns that have just a single cavity.  Cremation ashes are typically returned to the family in a thick polyethylene bag.  If the couples urn you are choosing only has a single cavity, the cremated ashes of both individuals can remain in the polyethylene bag and the bags placed together in the urn.  This allows the ashes to remain separated, yet still be together inside the urn.  Learn more about how to place the cremated ashes inside a cremation urn.

My spouse is over 300 lbs. Can a couples urn be used for their ashes in lieu of an individual urn?

Absolutely! For those instances where the ashes of the deceased will not fit inside a regular individual urn, companion cremation urns can be used to store the ashes.  Most companion urns for ashes will hold 400 cubic inches of cremated ashes or more.  Learn more about how to choose the correct urn for the ashes of a loved one.

Is it less expensive to buy a companion urn instead of two individual urns?

Individual cremation urns can range from $200 up to over $2,000.  Depending on the type of individual urns you are looking for, a companion urn will typically be more affordable than buying two separate individual cremation urns.

Neither my spouse nor I is deceased, but we want to buy an urn now so that when the time comes, we have one. Is that okay?

You can most certainly purchase a companion urn now!  Not only does that save the surviving spouse and family from having to choose a companion urn for the ashes of the deceased, but it is also has one less expense that the family will incur down the road.

I want a companion urn that will display a picture of my spouse and I. Do you have anything like that?

We certainly do!  Our 3D Artisan Portrait Urns are handcrafted hardwood cremation urns for ashes that feature a scenic full-color plate on the front.  The plate has the look and texture of an oil painting.  We can also add any personal photo that you choose - your spouse, you and your spouse together, whatever you want - and beautifully display it on the full-color plate.  Additionally, if you have a favorite scenic image that holds special meaning such as a picture of a vacation at the beach, an exotic location, etc., we can take that image and use it as the scenic background.  We have a Guide to Choosing Personalized Photo Urns that can also provide answers to your questions.

I have some personal items of my parents that I would like to place in the urn with their ashes. Is there room for more than just the cremated remains in a companion urn?

There is plenty of room for some smaller items or flat papers and photographs.  Jewelry such as wedding bands, necklaces, watches, love letters, or other personal effects that can be laid flat or don’t take up a lot of room can easily fit in the interior of the couples cremation urn.

How do you open a companion urn?

Companion urns open from either the top or the bottom depending on the urn.  If the couples urn opens from the bottom, there is typically a plate that attaches to the bottom of the urn with four screws.  The screws can be removed to expose the interior compartment of the cremation urn. Then simply screw the plate back onto the bottom of the urn once you have filled it.  Top-loading cremation urns typically have a hinged lid that opens to expose the interior cavity.

Is the companion urn lined?

Some companion cremation urns have a satin or velvet lining, but most do not.  If you have questions about whether or not a companion urn is lined, please email us at sales@evrmemories.com or give us a call at 1-877-723-4242 and we will be happy to assist you.

Can I choose where the engraved plates go or do you put them on the companion urn for me?

You have complete control over where the custom engraved plates are placed on the urn.  The engraved plates have an adhesive on the back, so simply remove the strip covering the adhesive and place the engraved plates on any flat surface on the urn.

Can I bury a wood companion urn?

We don’t recommend burying companion urns unless they are specifically designed for burial.  Biodegradable and eco-friendly companion urns are suitable for burial and are available in both individual cremation urn sizes and companion cremation urn sizes.

My spouse recently passed away and I’d like to buy a couples urn for us. Can I get the urn with just one engraved plate?

You absolutely can!  We can engrave just one plate; for the second plate, simply say “blank” or “do not engrave” and we will send the blank plate.  We offer a complete selection of custom engraved plates and easels.

I wanted a companion urn for the ashes of my parents and my sibling, but I can’t find a companion urn that will hold the ashes of three people. Can you custom build a larger family urn?

We absolutely can!  For custom companion urns that exceed the normal standards or for special situations, call us at 1-877-723-4242 or send us an email at sales@evrmemories.com with exactly how large of an urn you would like.  We will work with our artisans and you to help customize an urn exactly how you want it!

Do you have brass companion urns?

We do carry brass urns for couples!  The styles vary from simple and understated to ornate and decorated.  Brass companion urns hold about 400 cubic inches of cremation ashes and are easy to personalize with engraved plates in contrasting finishes.

I am traveling overseas to pick up my parents’ ashes. Can I bring the companion urn on the plane with me?

Yes, all of our couples cremation urns are FAA and TSA certified.  Simply tell airport personnel when going through the security checkpoint that you are traveling with a cremation urn and they will follow their standard policy.  Our TSA and Airline Requirements for Urns and Ashes webpage can give you more information.

I don’t understand how to figure out the cubic inches. Can you help?

Of course!  One pound of body weight is equal to one cubic inch of cremated ashes.  For example, a person weighing 200 pounds at the time of death will equal 200 cubic inches of cremated ashes.

Do you take the ashes out of the bag that they come in? Or do I empty the ashes into the urn myself?

That’s a personal decision.  Many families opt to simply place the bag into the companion urn, while others prefer to transfer the ashes from the polyethylene bag to the interior of the urn.  If you are commingling the ashes of two people then removing them from the bag would be the best option.  If you prefer to keep the ashes separated you can either leave them in the polyethylene bag or choose a companion urn with a divider.

Could I choose a companion urn for the ashes of my significant other and our dog?

Most definitely!  So long as the cremated ashes of the two do not exceed what the urn will hold, a companion cremation urn makes for a wonderful way to honor the life of a human and the animal you cherished.

We understand that choosing a companion urn can be overwhelming and families need some additional guidance.  Our selection of popular cremation urns is a great place for families to start their selection process, as the individual and cremation urns for two people have been chosen over and over again by our customers.
